Writing and creating theatre for diverse ethnicities requires careful consideration. Playwrights must move past stereotypes and create complex and culturally appropriate characters. Playwrights will learn how to write diverse characters with respect and nuance. Playwrights will learn how they can add to representation without telling stories that aren’t theirs to share. Playwrights will learn to how to research race and run a cultural consultation. Playwrights will devise an idea that improves representation in their writing during the course of this workshop.

About Workshop Facilitator:
Kelsey Rain is a Native American playwright with an MFA in Theatre with an emphasis in Playwriting from University of Idaho, where she also studied indigenous theatre, queer theatre, feminist theatre, and theatre for social change. She has acted, sang, directed, and dramaturged professionally, but her true passion is creating original works. Two of her plays were Finalists for Native Voices Playwright retreat. Kelsey Rain’s Pro-Voice verbatim piece is currently touring the state with a panel to promote women’s rights. She assistant directed the play Marisol at Idaho State University, which received many KCACTF awards including one for creating a brave rehearsal space.
