Title of Workshop: Playwriting Fundamentals

Workshop Description: This introductory workshop will cover the building blocks of what makes a great play, including character, conflict, and the features that make plays unique. Primarily lecture with some quick activities.

Target Audience:This workshop is intended for anyone with interest in the playwriting medium, no experience needed! Recommended age is 16+

Learning Objectives: Participants will gain a fundamental working knowledge of what makes playwriting a unique medium, how we can best take advantage of those unique features, and what tools can help jumpstart the process of writing a (first) play.  

Workshop Length: 1 Hour

Location: Zoom - Recording Available for up to 3 months after listed workshop date.

About the Facilitator:
Taylor Sklenar is a playwright and science communication Lecturer at Iowa State University. He spent two years pursuing his MA in Theatre in Columbia, Missouri, where he served as the managing director of the Missouri Playwrights’ Workshop and the Mizzou New Play Series. More recently, he has earned his MFA in Creative Writing and Environment and MS in Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University, where he served as poetry and drama editor for Flyway Journal of Writing and Environment, a core member of The EcoTheatre Lab, and the founder of Ames-based theatre collective, Focal Theatre Lab, which explores new and experimental work by local playwrights.
